Introduction to Parameteric Design 2023-2026

Teacher: Dr. Guy Austern
Teaching Assistants: Bat-El Hizmi, Gal Kapon

Introduction to Parametric Design explores how computation can help architects develop designs that respond to their environment, users, and methods of production. Through theoretical lectures, practical tutorials, and guest presentations, students build a foundation in computational design using Rhino, Grasshopper and Python. The course connects parametric modelling with performance analysis, optimization, and form finding, while introducing ideas from biomimetics, digital fabrication and machine learning.

A series of design exercises gives students experience in creating adaptable models, evaluating their performance, and using computational processes to generate and refine architectural form. Students define meaningful design goals, test alternatives, and investigate how environmental conditions, physical behaviour, and fabrication constraints can inform geometry. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on clear computational logic, creative experimentation, and critical reflection: students assess both the measurable performance of their results and their architectural value. The aim is to develop the skills and judgment needed to use computation as an integral part of the design process.
